Psalm 146:1-10 (NIV)

Praise the Lord.

  Praise the Lord, my soul.

I will praise the Lord all my life;

I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Do not put your trust in princes,

in human beings, who cannot save.

When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;

on that very day their plans come to nothing.

5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord their God.

He is the Maker of heaven and earth,

the sea, and everything in them—He remains faithful forever.

He upholds the cause of the oppressed

and gives food to the hungry.

    The Lord sets prisoners free,

8 the Lord gives sight to the blind,

the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,

    the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the foreigner

and sustains the fatherless and the widow,

but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

10 The Lord reigns forever,

your God, O Zion, for all generations.

     Praise the Lord.

1. Honor Leaders, but don’t idolize them.
Ps. 146:3 Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

  • Human leaders are necessary and to be honored.
  • But they cannot save us!
  • Promises and plans will fail.
  • Examine character and values before voting for someone.

2. Trust in the Lord.
Ps. 146:5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. 6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—He remains faithful forever.

  • Believe in God – He is our help and our hope!
  • Depend on Jesus – He alone has the power to save us!
  • God is faithful…forever!

3. Follow our Leader’s Example…
There are 3 verses with 3 phrases in each of what God does, and how we can follow His lead:

Ps. 146:7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungryThe Lord sets prisoners free,

  • By protecting the oppressed (7a)
  • By feeding the hungry (7b)
  • By bringing righteousness to our justice system (7c)

Ps. 146:8 the Lord gives sight to the blindthe Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous.

  • By bringing both physical and spiritual healing to others (8a)
  • By honoring those who serve with humility (8b)
  • By loving those with godly character, not just those with wealth or power (8c)

Ps. 146:9 The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

  • By providing help to those outside of our country (9a)
  • By providing financial help to widows and orphans (9b)
  • By standing against wickedness (9c)

Conclusion: There’s Always a Reason to Rejoice.

Ps. 146:1 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul.

2 I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

10 The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.

Even in politically stressful times, we can still find joy in praising and trusting God.
